Farm Unfixed Teen Science and Art Internship

We are a team of female scientists and high school students who empower each other. We work together to learn about the ecology of the Ozarks.

Farm Unfixed is a 3-week internship connecting students to land and promoting biodiversity.

Interns learn team science, land management, and expressing knowledge through artmaking.

Our ImpactEmpowerment, Education and Community Building

Teen education and empowerment:  In three intense weeks, teens learn their roles as restoration ecologists, educators, and researchers.

Team science and ecological research:  Together, we support the restoration of sensitive pond, riparian, and grassland habitats. We see ecosystem engineers like beavers returning and observe species of concern like the Eastern Meadowlark.

Friendship and Community building:  And we build bridges between high school science programs, the environmental activist community, and local families and land managers.

We designed a riparian edge effects study using butterfly transects. We have learned five butterfly families and over 40 plant species, and collect data three times each summer.
We conduct seasonal bird surveys using eBird audio identification along with visual confirmation. With over 55 species of birds observed in three habitat types, we are now researching ways to support these species’ conservation.
We conduct baseline water quality studies on spring-fed ponds to assess ecosystem health and identify native and non-native aquatic vegetation. We are harvesting and processing watershield for agricultural applications.
We create observational projects including monoprints, tempera, linocut, silkscreening, watercolor, and drawings. We also collaborate with designer Tzasná Perez Espinosa to create graphics of meaningful moments on the farm.
