This 18x24-inch art poster is a calendar that never goes out of date, with 12 wedges that represent about a month, each showing Ozark natural events for that time of year.

The original black & white poster, published in 1984, was first colored by youngsters who are now well into adulthood. To preserve this timeless artwork, we recently updated, digitized, and reprinted it. At first glance, the new poster looks like the old one, but it has more and better seasonal information. Biologists with the Missouri Department of Conservation provided scientific input on bloom times, hibernation, and other natural cycles.

After reprinting, we sponsored a coloring contest and reproduced the top two posters. Now you can enjoy a winning color version, or color the black & white version yourself!

The poster replicas shown online here are low-resolution versions. The actual poster is high resolution, with crisp, clean color, printed on high-quality, poster-weight paper.

The Ozark Seasons poster was a featured element at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival held July 2023 in Washington, D.C., as part of an Ozark Herbalism display hosted by Master Herbalist Sasha Daucus, left. With her is Denise Henderson Vaughn, lead artist in the group that produced the poster in 1984.

The poster reflects the values of the bioregional movement, which advocates lifestyles that mesh with ecosystems within one’s home region. Observing the cycles of nature at home is an important step toward bioregional awareness and stewardship.

The poster originally was originally created as one piece among many in an Ozark bioregional 'bundle,' which was produced to share essential elements of the Ozarks natural world with people in other regions.
